DD Images — Frequently Asked Questions

Last Updated: March 2026

General Questions

What is DD Images?

DD Images is a paid Safari Web Extension for macOS that helps you find and download images from most webpages. Open the extension popup while browsing, scan the page, and you'll see found images presented in a clean gallery view — with filters, sorting, and bulk download tools.

Which macOS and Safari versions are supported?

DD Images requires macOS 13 Ventura or later and a compatible version of Safari. It runs natively on both Apple Silicon (M-series) and Intel Macs.

Is DD Images free?

No. DD Images is a paid application, available for a one-time purchase through the Mac App Store. There is no free version and no subscription — pay once and use it indefinitely.

Does DD Images work in other browsers?

No. DD Images is built exclusively for Safari on macOS using Apple's Safari Web Extension APIs. It does not support Chrome, Firefox, or any other browser.

Does DD Images require an internet connection to run?

The extension itself works locally. It reads the page you're viewing and downloads images from their source URLs. It does not connect to any developer servers — the only network activity is fetching images directly from the source website.

Getting Started

How do I enable DD Images in Safari?

  1. Download and open DD Images from the Mac App Store
  2. Follow the in-app instructions to open Safari Extension Settings
  3. In Safari → Settings → Extensions, check the box next to DD Images
  4. Grant any permission prompts that Safari shows
  5. The DD Images icon will appear in Safari's toolbar

DD Images doesn't appear in the Safari toolbar. What do I do?

Go to Safari → Settings → Extensions and make sure DD Images is enabled. If the icon is not visible in the toolbar, right-click the toolbar and choose "Customize Toolbar" to add it.

How do I use DD Images?

  1. Navigate to a supported webpage in Safari
  2. Click the DD Images icon in the toolbar
  3. Click the Scan button in the popup — found images will appear in the gallery
  4. Use filters to narrow down results if needed
  5. Click an image to select it, or use "Select All"
  6. Click Download — images are saved to your Downloads folder automatically

Image Scanning

What types of images does DD Images detect?

DD Images scans for:

  • <img> tags (including srcset attributes)
  • <picture> source elements
  • Lazy-loaded images via data-src and similar attributes
  • CSS background images (where accessible)

Some images from the page aren't showing up. Why?

A few reasons why images might not appear:

  • Dynamic loading: Images loaded by JavaScript after the scan (e.g., via infinite scroll or lazy-loading triggered on scroll) may not be detected. Try scrolling the page first, then opening DD Images again.
  • Inline SVGs: Embedded SVGs not referenced by a URL may not appear.
  • Canvas elements: Images rendered to a <canvas> element are not accessible to the extension.
  • Iframes with cross-origin content: Content inside cross-origin iframes is not accessible due to browser security restrictions.

Filters & Sorting

What filters are available?

  • Minimum width / height: Show only images at or above a certain pixel dimension
  • Format: Show only JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, SVG, or any combination

How do I sort images?

You can sort the gallery by image dimensions or URL. Sorting options are available in the popup toolbar.

Are my filter settings saved?

Yes. Your filter and sort preferences are saved locally in your browser's storage and persist between sessions.

Downloading

Where are downloaded images saved?

Downloaded images are saved to your Downloads folder. The download folder cannot be changed.

Can I change the download folder?

No. Images are always saved to the system Downloads folder.

Can I download multiple images at once?

Yes. Select multiple images in the gallery (or click "Select All"), then click Download. Images are downloaded in parallel.

What happens if a download fails?

The failed image will be indicated in the gallery. The most common reasons for failure are:

  • The source website requires authentication or a session cookie
  • CORS or hotlink protection blocks direct downloads
  • The image URL has expired (common with CDN-served signed URLs)
  • Network connectivity issues

Are file names preserved?

DD Images attempts to use the original filename from the image URL. If the URL does not contain a recognizable filename, a descriptive name is generated based on the URL structure.

Important — Please Read:

The technical ability to download an image does NOT mean you have the legal right to use it. Most images on the internet are protected by copyright.

Can I download any image I find on a webpage?

Technically, DD Images can attempt to download any image it finds. Legally, you must have the right to do so. Before downloading, you are responsible for verifying that you have the necessary license, permission, or other lawful basis.

What types of images can I legally download?

Generally, you may download images that are:

  • In the public domain
  • Licensed under Creative Commons or similar open licenses that permit your intended use
  • Images you created or own the rights to
  • Images for which you have explicit written permission from the copyright holder
  • Images you are licensed to use (e.g., purchased stock photos)

When in doubt, do not download — contact the content owner to request permission.

Is the developer responsible if I download copyrighted images?

No. You are solely responsible for your use of DD Images and for ensuring any images you download are used lawfully. The developer provides a tool for image discovery and download — responsibility for legal compliance rests entirely with the user.

Privacy & Security

Does DD Images collect any data?

No. DD Images collects absolutely zero data. No analytics, no tracking, no telemetry, no usage statistics. The developer does not have access to which websites you visit or which images you download.

Does DD Images send anything to external servers?

No. The extension communicates only between your browser and the native macOS companion app — both on your own device. The only external connections are image download requests that go directly from your Mac to the source website.

What permissions does DD Images use?

  • Active tab: To read images from the page you are currently viewing
  • Native messaging: To talk to the macOS host app for file saving
  • Local storage: To remember your preferences on your device

DD Images does not have access to your browser history, other tabs, bookmarks, or passwords.

Troubleshooting

The extension popup opens but shows no images.

Try these steps:
  • Wait for the page to fully load, then try again
  • Some pages may have very strict security policies (CSP) that prevent extension content scripts from reading the DOM — this is a limitation of the website, not a bug
  • Safari requires you to grant permission for the extension to run on each website (or all websites). Check that you've granted access in the Safari toolbar popup

I granted permission but DD Images still can't see images on a specific site.

Some websites implement strict Content Security Policies (CSP) that can interfere with browser extensions. If a site actively blocks extensions, there is no workaround — this is a deliberate security choice by the website owner.

Downloads are failing with no clear error.

The most likely cause is CORS restrictions or hotlink protection on the source website. Many image hosting services and CDNs block direct downloads that don't originate from the website's own domain. This cannot be bypassed — it is enforced by the source server.

How do I completely reset DD Images?

Disable and re-enable the extension in Safari Settings, or uninstall and reinstall the app from the App Store. This clears all saved preferences.

DD Images doesn't work on local files (file:/// URLs).

Safari extensions cannot run on file:/// URLs — this is a browser security restriction that applies to all extensions, not just DD Images. If you want to test images from files stored locally, you need to serve them through a local web server.

Two quick ways to start a local server:

  • Python (built into macOS): open Terminal, cd to the folder with your files, then run python3 -m http.server 8080. See docs.python.org for details.
  • Homebrew: install a lightweight server such as caddy or nginx via brew.sh.

After starting the server, open http://localhost:8080 in Safari — DD Images will work normally on that page.
